It is hosted by Robbie Ferguson & Carrie Webb. It is a good show for people who need information about their computers. Robbie is very knowledgeable and from what I can tell Carrie is a computer user and not a power user, so she brings the ‘normal’ side to the program which is nice, because so many computer vid-casts tend to get geeky and lose the interest of ‘normal’ users. So check it out.

The first program I have discovered is called Partimage. It is very similar to programs like ghost and what not, but it is open source and not controlled by some over bearing company.

The next two programs, Camstudio and Record My Desktop, are screen recording software. I’m planning on making some videos in the future about installing and operating different stuff on the computer and I need such a program, that will allow me to reocrd what I do on my screen so I can place it in my videos. Both are open source programs.  I’m currently making a video about installing Ubuntu Wubi on a windows machine.

The next programs are games. Two of them Bos Wars and Plane Shift are cross platform, meaning they will work on both Windows and Linux. Here is a description of Bos Wars from the Bos Wars website:

“Bos Wars is a futuristic real time strategy game (RTS). In a RTS game, the player has to combat his enemies while developing his war economy. Everything runs in real-time, as opposed to turn-based games where the player always has to wait for his turn. The trick is to balance the effort put into building his economy and building an army to defend and attack the enemies.

Bos Wars has a dynamic rate based economy. Energy is produced by power plants and magma gets pumped from hot spots. Buildings and mobile units are also built at a continuous rate. Control of larger parts of the map creates the potential to increase your economy throughput. Holding key points like roads and passages allow for different strategies.

It is possible to play against human opponents over LAN, internet, or against the computer. Bos Wars successfully runs under Linux, MS Windows, BSD, and Mac OS X.

Bos Wars aims to create a completely original and fun open source RTS game.”

So try it out, doesn’t cost anything.

“PlaneShift is a Role Playing Game immersed into a 3D virtual fantasy world which is FULLY FREE to play. Fully free means you will have no surprises of premium content which will limit your gameplay or unbalance the game. There are no limitations in skills, ranks, abilities, items you can gain with your free account. There are no time limits or additional constraints. Other similar games just advertize the “free” concept to sell you premium accounts. We don’t. Servers and bandwidth will be donated by sponsors.

At the present state of development, PlaneShift is not a complete game, but what we call a “tech demo”. With this definition we mean that the game is still under heavy development, so you may easily find bugs, glitches and missing features. We decided to open it to the public because we want to have your feedback on improving the game and because we have enjoyed seeing our progress being put into productive use from the beginning. Apart from this, the game is enjoyable and has hundreds of active players.”

The last two programs are games as well for Linux and Windows as well and are similar to Sim City by Maxis. They are Lin City and Lin City-NG. There are wiki’s about both LinCity and LinCity-NG. It looks like fun.

So give all the programs a look see and if you don’t like them, just uninstall. ;) /mlm

As my supper from last night did not, ensuing a long night of stomach aches and pains. Figures, just as soon as you get to recover from one ailment, along comes another. Good way to start off the New Year (sarcasm). Good thing is if the year starts out super lousy, then the rest can’t be all too bad in comparison, huh?! I try to have a positive outlook look on things, but the negativity always seems to seep back into place. That statement alone makes me wonder, did people talk about positive and negative attitudes and what not before the invention of the battery? Hmm, try and find that answer on the net. I have found out that there are certain questions and thoughts that you will never find an answer to, let alone discussed on the internet. Still there lingers the ultimate question in life, ‘If an irresistible force hits an immovable object, what is the outcome?’. By definition alone an irresistible force is one that can not be stopped or resisted and an immovable object is one that can not be moved. Chalk it up to one of the many of life’s unanswerable questions and mysteries. Anyway enough preponderance for the day.

Enjoy life, because you may never know when it will come to an end. :| /mlm

What’s neat about these capacitors is that they are smaller than current LiIon batteries and can hold longer charges. That in itself is good, but the neat thing about capacitors is they don’t wear out, and these new Super Caps only lose .1% (1/10th of a percent) of their charge a month. So in a years time it would only lose 1.2% of it’s charge. But the best thing is that once the capacitor runs down, unlike a battery which can take a few hours to recharge a capacitor will only take a few seconds. Yup, seconds, not minutes or hours. This company is a ‘for real’ company founded by ex IBM and semiconductor employees. Lockheed Martin has a contract with them already, which in itself is somewhat proof that they are not a fly by night company. And they are not the only ones working on Super High Capacity Capacitors, either. There are several other companies and Universities working on it too. Even the banks that we know of that received money will not disclose, and don’t have to, to the Congress what they did with the money. Also there is a bilp or two about all the heavy metals that the government say are accepted levels in our vaccinations and food. Scary stuff. Thought I would pass it along.

The weather and web updates suck and are not kept up. Like tonight, we know for a fact, because the bus driver called our house, that Mediapolis is running on hard surfaced roads only for Monday. But go to the radio station’s web site and what do you see, Friday’s cancellations and delays and it is now Sunday! The same goes for the news, they use to have daily news, not anymore, the Saturday and Sunday news is the same damn news they broadcasted on Friday morning. Nice huh? If you are going to go to a freaking automated radio station do not repeat old ads, old weather reports and warnings, and news from two days pasts. It can cause some harm to some people and is freaking irresponsible! So now I recommend listening to KCPS 1150 AM and screw KBUR, until they can get their act together. It is called PC Inspector. I downloaded and tried several trial versions of pay programs and none worked as good as this one, so strike another one up for free ware programs and those who make it.

I thought something had hit the side of the house so I looked out and saw nothing. And I didn’t think much more of it, until my wife came home from church today and said that people at work were talking about hearing the noise around the same time. Some were talking to relatives as far away as Ottumwa, Iowa and they heard it there too. So my only conclusion I can draw is that some jet must have been running at super sonic speed over Southeast Iowa at that time creating a sonic boom. I could not find anything on the net about it, yet. I’ll have to watch the newspaper and see if anything will be in it tomorrow. Southeast Iowa is under one of the major air traffic routes, so it is plausible. :) /mlm

The kids had a fun. My son was already there as when he got off of work the previous night, the roads were pretty crappy, so he just went over to my parents house and stayed the night. It was great to visit and just feel relaxed. My oldest daughter had received the game Twister, for Christmas so it was fun watching her and my youngest daughter play the game. Grandpa (dad) had fun sitting in his chair playing with the girls and watching everyone else. He said he was all snuggled in his corner, and I can’t say as I blame him as the air temperatures were in the single digits and the wind chills were around 16 to 18 BELOW zero! As my favorite saying states, that is Damn Cold! I want to thank mom for the chocolate chow mien cookies. YUM!

Over 1/2″ of ice the other day and now more snow and freakish high winds. As I stated in my twitter a few minutes ago, the power has already flickered on and off twice, because the winds and the power lines still have ice on them. The country roads are crap and like a sheet of ice. They are slick so far as for the first time that I can remember, Monday, Mediapolis School district is going to run the buses on hard surfaced roads only. I can not ever remember the school doing this before. So remember winter doesn’t officially start until tomorrow, and man, what an entrance! :)/mlm

A few years ago I had a cold about the same that made me cough really hard and after I was over it, my voice had changed enough that I couldn’t produce and high pitches easily as before, this one feels like it might be the same. ARTICLE The sad part is that the drug companies are in bed with the Federal Governments and State governments as well, with some states like New Jersey going as far as stating that your child can not be enrolled in public school without having this vaccine. And this is happening here and abroad. It is scary when the governments are telling that we have to potentially risk paralyzing our children. And unlike most diseases in the past cervical cancer is not contagious, so it should be up to the parents and the child NOT the governments or schools. People need to stand up to the massive corruption and fear mongering of the drug companies and the government. Where the hell has common sense gone! /mlm

My son is sitting back here in my little cubby hole playing Halo on my Xbox and getting killed rather quite often.

I finally got the total of my EGD test in November. For those of you who don’t know what an EGD is, and I didn’t either, it is, are you ready for this, an abbreviation for esophagogastroduodenoscopy or in short layman’s terms an upper scope of the digestive tract. Sometimes, to me it makes no sense to make words that are longer than the meaning of those words. What the hell is it with Lawyers and Doctors that they think they have to have special words for common meanings? Some bull crap status I suppose. Anyway back on track, the total cost for the EGD was $3,685 and that was test one of three. The second test I had that the doctors wanted was a scope of the other end, my colon. The EGD scopes from the mouth to the duodenum and the colonoscopy scopes from the bottom to the small intestine, and the third test I had was a small bowel follow through which gets the middle and basically covers the area missing by the EGD and colonoscopy. I do not have all the paper work in yet for the small bowel follow through. The colonoscopy on the other hand came to a total of $5,004, so between the upper and lower scopes you are looking at a total of $9,689. Now, you tell me, how is someone without insurance supposed to afford test like these? They can’t and the hospitals and insurance companies don’t want to help to lower prices either, but on the other hand they both like to preach that if cancers were caught earlier then treatment could begin and overall costs would be cheaper and insurance cost would be lowered, but they don’t want to help to catch it earlier. So in essence they are all as the saying goes, blowing sunshine up our a$$es. In truth they like the high costs otherwise they would be doing a lot more to do something about it. (end of rant, breathe) OK, I’m back to ground level, just ticks me off all the bull crap. So all in all for three tests to check out my digestive tract is over $10,000. Truly unbelievable.

Anyways I downloaded and installed the trial version of System Mechanic 8 from www.iolo.com to give it a try on my windows machines. Heard about it on the computer america radio show (www.computeramerica.com) and that got me to thinking about it, then the other day on Twit (www.twit.tv) John C. Dvorak (www.dvorak.com/blog) mentioned that anytime his system gets boggy he uses it. I tried it for 3 days and liked it enough that I bought a version. I don’t believe in using something and not paying for it.  I also  am trying out the free version of PC Tools (www.pctools.com) antivirus / spyware and so far I like it too, and it is free. Updated Handbrake (www.handbrake.fr) and Defraggler (www.defraggler.com) and CCleaner. I also installed and am evaluating Glary Utilities (www.glaryutilities.com) which is a free software swiss army knife of sorts, and I like it too.
Anyways that is my round up of my recent software adventures if you will.

The LED on the front says that I need a new battery. From APC’s site it is only a mere $180, and from Amazon.com, who ships from some other UPS supply company it is Only $120 + $20 shipping. To buy a new unit is $350+, and I know I only paid $200 or so on sale, so to buy a replacement battery is more than 50% of the cost of a new on one sale. WOW! What a freaking rip off, especially when you consider a lawnmower battery is only $20 and a good strong car battery is less than $80, but yet they want $150 more or less for a sealed battery for a freaking power supply. Damn!

As John McCain would say “That my friends” is Damn Cold! And now we are one county away from being included in a winter storm watch. As of now (11:10am) we are expected to get 4 inches of snow. That could change by tomorrow, and I hope it does, for the lesser amounts. The snow really doesn’t bother me as much as the chance of the ice on Thursday. It is kind of like the lesser of two evils, and in that case I would take the evils of snow over the evils of ice any day.
I switched my laptop and 2nd Ubuntu Linux machines around. This way I can sit in the elbow crook of my desk and be at both my Ubuntu machines, as I use them for about 90% of the stuff I do. I almost do all my surfing on Ubuntu and all my email is done on Ubuntu. Less hassle than windows, no malware threats, and no crashes. There are just a few things and software that I want to keep that I still need my Windows machines around.
I should have another netcast up tonight / tomorrow for MLManley. Might do a video , haven’t decided yet. Need to get my butt in gear and get back to converting my cassettes to mp3’s, then go through them all and add / correct the tags on the files. Also I need to convert VHS recording of 12 Redneck Days to digital for my brother in law, at my wife’s request.
Until later on, try and stay warm and drink hot chocolate! Yea! :-) /mlm
